Washington 30mph TRO Consultation

This is a message from Parish Councillor John Loney (Chair of the Traffic & Transport Committee).

A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) is the process that West Sussex County Council uses to assess and hopefully implement a road change. The parish council has made an application for a TRO to implement a speed limit reduction on the A283 Washington Road to be considered. This TRO is currently in public consultation but this ends today - 17 October 2024.

Public support for a TRO is vital for WSCC to agree to implement it so it is important that people comment in support of it before the deadline.

The TRO is to reposition the 40-30 speed change on Washington Rd. It is currently by Heather Way, and the proposal is to move it further out of the village, close to Water Lane.

Reasons why this TRO should be supported are:-

  • The earlier reduction in the speed limit inbound to the village enables drivers to adjust their speed before entering the village.
  • The current speed is unsuitable for vulnerable road users, who walk on narrow pathways very close to vehicles passing at 40 mph.
  • The traffic lights at the pedestrian crossing outside the RAFA housing / Sussexdown Care Home are too close to the speed change and many drivers misread the road and approach them too quickly.
  • The junction at Heather Way/RAFA site entrance/and the traffic lights are too close to the current speed change and therefore very dangerous.
  • Heather Way( Angel Sands) and the RAFA housing site, both have approval for further development. This will increase traffic at this junction, which is already unsafe.
  • During the construction phase at the RAFA site, many larger vehicles will require access, and this will add hugely to the risk of a serious accident. The RAFA will be developing for some time.

Please support this TRO and tell anyone you know about this consultation and ask them to support it. The more support - the more WSCC will know that the requested change has public support.
